What women are represented and how?
Women in the 1960s observer pages are under represented. For instance, Jackie 'we're happy' reflects a patriarchal, social and cultural context in which women are most often denied in terms of their relationship with men. The front pages all under-represent women as they are barely noticed or seen in an objectifying way. Women's lingerie is advertised the most throughout the whole representation of women, suggesting that they were only seen to be 'used' and were only displayed as models. Nothing smart or political were compared to women apart from Barbara Castle, the only female politician shown in the three front pages, she was trying to argue for less unequal pay for men and women. Reflecting the patriarchal, social and cultural context of the 1960s in which it was accepted that women were paid less than men for doing the same job.
Following on, the fact women were paid less then men for the exact same job shows how unequal life was for women, reinforcing how much lower they were represented. Majority of Women in these newspapers are shown with a man or have articles linked in with a man. Implying women can't be seen powerfully by themselves they have to be linked in with a male to show authority. Reinforcing how women were seen as much lower and did not have the equal rights men had.
